The aim of the ISL is to train teachers in liturgical and sacramental theology as well as pastorate leaders in dioceses and religious congregations.
Starting out from theology, the Bible, history and the other human sciences, it combines scholarly analysis of the heritage of liturgical traditions (including those of the Christian East) with an attention to the requirements of Church life today.
The ISL provides classes and training sessions which continue the heritage of the Institute for Liturgical Music (IML).
